"The church does not exist for itself. It exists to meet needs in the community. We are to love our neighbors, and according to Christ, being neighbors is not defined by distance." — Dr. Sam Adeyemi
LAGOS, NIGERIA, May 03, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In response to the catastrophic humanitarian crisis caused by the Feb. 6th earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the Daystar Christian Centre of Lagos, Nigeria, led by Pastor Sam Adeyemi and his wife Pastor Nike Adeyemi, has donated N15 million (USD $32,559) to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for lifesaving assistance and protection to those impacted.
The Senior Pastor of the church, Sam Adeyemi, said "The church does not exist for itself. It exists to meet needs in the community. We are to love our neighbors, and according to Christ, being neighbors is not defined by distance. We are neighbors when we care."
Registering 7.8 and 7.7 in magnitude, the Turkish-Syrian earthquakes were the largest in the region since 1938, causing an ongoing catastrophe with over 57,000 people confirmed dead, 1.5 million left homeless, and an estimated 14 million affected.
Daystar has a proud history of helping those in need, partnering with the UNHCR in the past to help Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across Africa, and donating N95 face masks and surgical gowns to both the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research and the Lagos State University Hospital to help fight against COVID-19.
Daystar follows in the tradition of the early church, which was motivated to give, ensuring people did not go to bed hungry in a time of difficulty.
