PITTSBURGH, PA, October 18, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Berger and Green awarded Reannan Butler its annual Heart Disease Scholarship. Reannan, a first-year student at Dickinson State University, plans to use her $1,000 scholarship award to ease the financial burdens of paying for college as she pursues a biology degree.
Reannan was inspired to apply to Berger and Green's Heart Disease Scholarship because of the adverse health condition she faced as a child. She was diagnosed with ventricular septal defect (VSD) as an infant, causing her to struggle academically and socially throughout her childhood.
Instead of becoming discouraged, Reannan found an outlet in softball that helped her confront her learning disabilities and negative emotions. She loved to be on the field, and as she developed her softball skills, her confidence in all areas of her life began to grow. Now, Reannan brings her love of softball to Dickinson State University, where she plays the sport and volunteers with the team at community events. When she isn't on the field, she volunteers at local food shelters or plans events with other student body members.
After she earns her degree, Reannan aspires to become a dentist and give back to those who cannot afford dental care. She received care from Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities while growing up and aims to work at one after securing her college degree. In doing this, she hopes to bring Native American representation and leadership to the community where she works.
