Dr. Airica Steed Honored for Health & Wellness Leadership by 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc.

CLEVELAND, OH, December 20, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- This past weekend, Dr. Airica Steed was recognized with the prestigious Health & Wellness Award at the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland Awards. Applauded for her ongoing dedication to eradicating health inequities and transforming healthcare systems, Dr. Steed shared her personal and professional story during the event. Her remarks offered a profound glimpse into the values, experiences, and aspirations driving her impactful leadership.

A Legacy Rooted in Healthcare and Community
Dr. Airica Steed's commitment to healthcare runs deep. She is a fourth-generation nurse, tracing her family's caregiving roots back to her great-grandmother in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Growing up surrounded by nurses and self-made entrepreneurs, Steed knew early on that she was destined to carry on her family's tradition of service. However, she could not have predicted how personal tragedy would become the catalyst for her mission.

After losing several loved ones, Dr. Steed's calling crystallized. Determined to address the healthcare inequities and systemic flaws, she transitioned into healthcare leadership. For Dr. Steed, this pivot was not just a career change—it was a deeply personal mission to rewrite the healthcare narrative for marginalized communities.

"I see myself as an extension of the community," she shared during the awards ceremony. "I am responsible for being the voice of those who are often not heard. This sense of responsibility has been a powerful driver of my journey and success."

Transforming Healthcare from Within
Dr. Airica Steed's approach to healthcare transcends traditional roles. Though she identifies as an "accidental leader," her decision to step into leadership was anything but accidental for the communities she serves. She recognized that working within the system was the only way to create sustainable, systemic change. Her philosophy? Disrupt from the inside to fix what's broken.

Throughout her career, Dr. Steed has spearheaded significant transformations in healthcare, improving access and ensuring better outcomes for underserved populations. Undoubtedly, one of her pivotal roles came during her tenure as the CEO of MetroHealth System in Cleveland. She became the first Black CEO, the first woman CEO, and the first nurse CEO in the organization's history, rewriting not only MetroHealth's story but also that of the city it serves.

Under her leadership, MetroHealth implemented innovative programs aimed at addressing health disparities within Cleveland, a city often ranked among the most challenging for Black women. Her work with the Institute for H.O.P.E.™ and collaborative initiatives tackling social determinants of health empowered MetroHealth's 9,000-strong workforce to make healthcare accessible to those most in need. "My goal has always been about giving people hope and ensuring they have the resources to envision a brighter future," she said.

Overcoming Adversity to Inspire Change
Dr. Steed's story is as much about overcoming personal adversity as it is about professional excellence. Reflecting on her childhood, she spoke lovingly of her athletic background, which taught her valuable lessons in resilience. She recalled her days as a track and field athlete, competing in the Junior Olympic Games and meeting her idol, Olympic sprinting legend Florence Griffith Joyner (Flo Jo). These early experiences instilled in her a sense of discipline and determination that would serve her well when facing challenges later in life.

She also emphasized the importance of learning from failure, a lesson she considers integral to growth. "Failure and success are not opposites—they are part of the same journey. Every moment of failure I've encountered has become a stepping stone to my greatest successes. Overcoming adversity is my superpower."

When asked what advice she would offer to others, she passionately encouraged risk-taking and persistence. "Sometimes, the right path isn't the easy one or the most obvious one. Take risks, stay proactive, and don't be afraid to feel uncomfortable. That's where growth happens."

100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland's Mission
The award Dr. Steed received comes from an organization as deeply committed to community empowerment as she is. The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. is part of a national network dedicated to mentoring, educating, and uplifting African-American youth to create lasting generational change.

Focusing on mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment, the 100 Black Men organization provides young people with the tools and support they need to thrive. Elevating Voices and Building Communities
Reflecting on her career and its alignment with community advocacy, Dr. Steed described her work as a collaborative effort. "The community has always embraced and lifted me up when I needed it. I see my work as an extension of their strength and their hope."

Steed's focus on collaboration has been a key driver of her success. Whether working with local partners in Cleveland to tackle infant mortality and transportation barriers or advocating for community-centered care at Sinai Chicago Health System, her ability to unify stakeholders toward shared goals has been instrumental.

At every stage of her career, Dr. Steed has prioritized the voices of those most often ignored. This focus is rooted in her belief in healthcare as an engine for societal change, not just patient care. "Healthcare has the potential to break cycles of poverty and lift people out of despair. It's not just about treating the individual; it's about creating opportunities for a better future."

A Future Full of Promise
Though no longer CEO of MetroHealth, Dr. Airica Steed's mission remains unwavering. Her work continues to address systemic healthcare disparities with even greater focus and impact. Her commitment to advocating for sustainable change is a reminder that leadership is not about titles—it's about action and accountability.

Her legacy serves as an enduring testament to the power of pairing empathy with expertise, of using one's personal experiences to fuel professional purpose. "I want to be remembered for bringing out the best in people and for building a legacy of positive change," she said.

At the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland awards, Dr. Steed exemplified everything the Health & Wellness Award represents.
