Washington, DC, September 25, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- BLFJ Endorsement of Senator Barack Obama: "The impending economic collapse that began on Wall Street will have a tremendous negative impact on the Black Community, particularly the poor. Whenever America suffers as a whole on this level, the Black community is certain to face even harder times. As a result, Senator Barack Obama is the best choice available for President of the United States. Though we do not agree with Mr. Obama on a few important domestic and international issues, we find him by far the better choice for the Black Community and for America at large in November. The fine example of an Obama first family, originating out of our community, is a priceless sight for a people saddled with families in crisis. Black men, often maligned in society, are given a fresh facelift by the success of Senator Obama. On the key issues of the economy, education, health care, and civil rights-clearly Senator Obama is the most progressive of the two candidates and may initiate better policies toward Africa.
Of course, we would prefer to see more attention paid to the millions incarcerated, political prisoners, racial profiling, police brutality and a litany of socio-economic problems that keep inner cities and Black areas in general constantly struggling to gain its equilibrium. But we can not look for a President Obama to solve all the problems in our community. Merely casting a vote for Senator Barack Obama is an immature expression of our political obligation towards our self-determination. The Black Community must leverage increased unity and power on this electoral system in order to see measurable results from this process. Black Leaders, Black Lawyers, Black Organizations and new class of champions must emerge to give new meaning to the historic struggles of the past by rising to this historic occasion. As Obama rises, we must rise with him in a self-determining way.
The Supreme Court makeup, Federal Judicial appointments, the direction of the Justice Department, important decisions on international law and human rights are all at stake here. We pray that the legal mind and moral sense of Senator Obama will prevail and set America on a new course."
