Kathleen Louise St. John Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Musical Composition

    California-Based Symphonic and Orchestral Composer

SAN DIEGO, CA, October 12, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kathleen Louise St. John, Musical Composer, Pianist, Artist, and Playwright, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of musical composition.

With 39 impressive years of professional experience in the arts, Ms. St. John specializes in composing contemporary classical music for large ensembles and orchestras and electronic music. Her extensive history in music saw her as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center where she studied under the British composer, Alexander Goehr, a guest lecturer at the Department of Music of the University of Ottawa. Ms. St. John was designated a Norlin Foundation Fellow by The MacDowell Colony in special tribute to Aaron Copland and was a composer-in-residence at the American Dance Festival held at Duke University and at the Charles Ives Center in Connecticut. Furthermore, she was a pianist for the CalArts Twentieth-Century Players under the direction of Morton Subotnick and a graduate assistant to pianist Leonid Hambro.

Recipient of numerous commissions, Ms. St. John received various Meet The Composer grants and residency fellowships from The MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She was honored with the National Endowment for the Arts Composers Fellowship, participated in the third International Congress on Women in Music in Mexico City and was a co-winner of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers' Fifth Annual Rudolph Nissim Award along with composer Henry Brant. Moreover, her visual scores are featured in 'Notation 21', a recently published hardback book about international visual music of all genres.

Ms. St. John received her Bachelor of Music in Composition from The Juilliard School in 1971, where she studied under musical greats Hugo Weisgall, Luciano Berio and Ania Dorfmann. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Music Composition from the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, where she was mentored by Mel Powell. Additionally, she completed coursework at Boston University Tanglewood Institute and coursework in electronic music at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center under Vladimir Ussachevsky, Mario Davidovsky, Bulent Arel, and Alice Shields. She is a member of the International Alliance for Women in Music and recently completed an epic psychological musical drama for dramatic-soprano soloist and symphony orchestra, and has completed her second theatrical play -- a two-act serio-comedy entitled "Love Game".
