HOUSTON, TX, February 22, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A New England produce company that voluntarily recalled snacks manufactured from peanuts processed in the Georgia company at the center of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella-related illness attributed food accounting software operating on the produce company's computers for helping trace customers who bought the products.
Jim Schofield, an executive with Don Shapiro Produce, Inc., in Everett, MA, said he did not know if the peanut products his company recalled were tainted by salmonella poison, but he said the company is aware that peanuts processed at the Georgia plant were ingredients in the snack products.
In a televised interview with The Boston Globe and its media affiliates, Schofield told reporter Scot Yount, that Don Shapiro Produce, Inc., was successful in tracking the use of private label J. J. Kelly peanut snacks, "because we have an excellent computer system with a great database." Schofield was referencing the produce accounting software designed and sold by Houston-based Edible Software.
He said his company did a thorough investigation and after identifying their customers, notified each with instructions to remove the snacks from shelves.
CBS news radio-affiliate, WTIC-FM in Boston, and www.efoodalert.blogspot.com, an Internet site that focuses on food safety issues, also reported the produce company's peanut snack recall.
Henri Morris, a CPA who is president and CEO of Edible Software said: "It is not possible to know how many people could have sustained salmonella poisoning and fallen ill or worse - if in fact, any of the J.J. Kelly peanut products did contain contaminated ingredients that reached the public. What is important," said Morris, "is that our client was proactive in their immediate use of Edible Software to instantly identify the products that came from the specific vendor, as well as every one of the customers to whom the end-product was sold."
