Future of Global Economy Revealed in...a Diet Book?!?

The Pen and Paper Diet focuses entirely on calorie or energy consumption. The stages of the diet can be applied to the current state of the global economy.

TUCSON, AZ, March 13, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Pen and Paper Diet is a personal daily calorie budget using pen and paper to track calorie consumption. The main idea in the book is that if you are overweight, you should start consuming the amount of calories required for your ideal healthy weight to begin safe weight loss. A person will lose weight if they do this even if they do not change what types of food they eat or increase their activity level with exercise.

The following are the stages:
Slight Hunger
Efficiency
Freefall
Plateau
Refinement
Your Calorie Number
Adjustment for age and temporary increases in activity level

In 2007, the global economy was very obese. Individuals and businesses at the end of that year began to go on a diet and stop spending as much (e.g. change in consumption from 4,000 cals a day to 3,000). People and organizations began to experience slight discomfort due to their decreased spending, but then they progressed to being more efficient with their money which resulted in maintaining their desired quality of life. The economy progressed into the freefall stage and started declining slowly. Higher fuel and food prices as well as concern for the future last summer caused many people and businesses to change their consumption behavior toward what could be considered an anorexic eating disorder. By significantly changing our consumption (e.g. change in consumption from 3,000 cals a day to 500 cals), the freefall of the global economy has steepened dramatically.

Anorexia can lead to many illnesses like osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), severe constipation and lethargy (abnormal drowsiness). When a person consumes under 1500 cals a day, they should be under physician supervision due to potential medical complications. Death can result from anorexia due to cardiac arrest as well as an imbalance of electrolytes and fluids.

To restore the global economy to a normal freefall stage, individuals and businesses should consume what they need as if we have already hit a plateau (at a healthy GDP level). Individuals should continue to be safe (i.e. annual medical check-ups), keep realistic promises to their children (i.e. buy them a car if you said you would) and further their education to prepare for jobs of the future. Businesses should cut salaries before cutting people so that they still have a viable workforce when the economy hits a plateau. They should also continue buying necessary machinery to prepare for future sales.

Some may read this and think, "I'll let the other guy do the buying and wait for the plateau." The problem is our interconnection and the influence we give to others by our actions. Your neighbor will notice you're always staying at home now or that your child is delaying school due to costs. Your pharmacist will know that you're not buying the medication you need or others will see that your business has laid off too many workers and delayed buying some tools in order to have a nice profit margin by the end of the year.

Consume what you need as if we were at a plateau with a healthy GDP level. We don't have to get obese again, but organs will begin failing if we all choose to be anorexic. If we don't increase our consumption to a normal healthy GDP level soon, world leaders may be faced with the difficult decision of some form of global nationalization (like an Emergency Room Physician receiving a collapsed patient and doing what it takes to get them conscious and functioning again). Who enjoys having needles and tubes sticking out of their body? I think no one so let's start consuming a little more.
