Cataracts are another age-related lens problem. The lens develops opacities which block light from reaching the retina. When cataracts grow large enough to interfere with daily tasks, the eye's lens must be removed and replaced with an artificial lens.

What is ReSTOR?
ReSTOR is the trade name for one of the intraocular lenses (IOLs) that are available for treating presbyopia and cataracts. The ReSTOR Procedure
The procedure is performed in an outpatient surgery center.
1. The eye surgeon numbs the eye with anesthetic eye drops.
2. A very tiny incision is made at the cornea's outer edge.
3. A small instrument is inserted which emits ultrasound from its tip. The ultrasound energy gently breaks up the lens to make it easy to remove
4. Your eye surgeon uses gentle suction to remove the lens pieces.
5. The ReSTOR intraocular lens is inserted into the same membrane pocket that previously contained the natural lens.

The ReSTOR IOL is designed with concentric steps, each one bending light differently. Together they focuses light onto the retina correctly for enhanced vision at varying distances.

Who is a ReSTOR Candidate?
If you have cataracts or presbyopia and wish to improve near, intermediate or distance vision with decreased dependence on glasses, you may be a good candidate for ReSTOR. If you have had previous laser vision correction or corneal laser eye surgery you may qualify for ReSTOR if your eyes are in good health.

To be a good candidate you would need to have realistic expectations of the procedure and that can be determined by talking with your qualified eye surgeon.

You would not qualify if you have an unstable vision prescription, a chronic infection, or uncontrolled diabetes. If you depend on having sharp nighttime vision another IOL may be a better choice and that can be discussed with your ophthalmologist.
